UR completes universitywide diversity study

By LORI GABLE, Rochester Business Journal – 2/13/17

The results are from the first universitywide diversity engagement survey at the University of Rochester.

University leaders report a 48 percent participation rate with some 12,000 faculty, staff, trainees and students providing input on how valued they feel and how they perceive the state of diversity there.

The survey was administered in February 2016 at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Nursing, Simon Business School and the Warner School of Education.

The Presidential Diversity Council, established by President Joel Seligman in November 2016, is slated to use the survey data to guide its work.

The council reviewed the results and found them to be consistent with previous recommendations made by the Commission on Race and Diversity, that leadership engagement in the management of diversity is crucial in making the university welcoming and inclusive.

The council and Presidential Diversity Council Implementation Committee are scheduled to take part in unconscious bias training sessions Feb. 28.
